Society speaker
DRESDEN – “From Saw Mill to Shoe Shop: An Industrial History of Gardiner’s Cobbossee Stream Gorge” is the title of a talk to be given by Richmond historian and current Lincoln County Historical Association President Jay Robbins.
He will speak to the public at a meeting of the Dresden Historical Society at 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Bridge Academy, which now serves as Dresden’s Town Library.
Cobbossee Stream Gorge extends for about one and a third miles through downtown Gardiner, dropping its water 127 feet. The gorge was first dammed by Sylvester Gardiner in 1760 to support lumber and grist mills.
Expanding to a system of eight dams supporting multiple industries at each site, Gardiner’s waterpower supported everything from paper mills to foundries to saw mills to shoe factories.
Combining many old map and photo images with more recent pictures, Robbins will walk the audience down the stream through time. To find out more about the association, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.lincolncountyhistory.org.
