With Cleanup Week for Lewiston and Auburn coming right up, my concern is trash being put out too early. I believe that has always been a problem, as so many have witnessed while driving along the streets. It is hard to imagine why some people don’t care about how things are piled up or scattered around. That must make it hard for the crews who have to pick up those messes.

With plenty of snow still on the ground, things will be even messier. Even if it doesn’t rain or snow, items put out there for several days before being picked up will get saturated.

City public works directors should put off the collections for a month, or at least until the snow is gone. It’s bad enough to pick up trash when it’s dry, imagine having to climb into snowbanks, as I’m sure workers will encounter along their routes.

Just a thought, and I believe it would save money and time in the long run.
