At the dawn of the school year, the annual Patriots Pen contest was presented. This contest, given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), challenges students from all over to come up with a creative outlook on the year’s topic. Sue Reny, a spirited history teacher at Lewiston Middle School, enthusiastically introduced this years topic, “Citizenship in America”, to her 8th grade students. In December, her continuing support for Veterans’ affairs and for students’ participation in the Patriot’s Pen contest was recognized. Mrs. Reny was given the honor of the 06′ 07′ VFW Post 9150 Teacher of the Year. She proudly placed her plaque beside her six other Teacher of the Year Awards. Any of her students would delightfully agree that she definitely deserves this award. Junior Vice Commander Robert MacDonald spoke kindly of Mrs. Reny:
“Our post was elated when Mrs. Reny won the Teacher of the Year Award. She works closely with us on our Patriot’s Pen Program, giving us an opportunity to reward several students each year for their hard work and to showcase the city of Lewiston and its students.”
