The medical conditions of an Oxford man and his son are steadily improving after a car accident in North Carolina that claimed the life of the boy’s mother and the man’s wife, a family friend said Tuesday.

Philip DuBois, 41, and Jamie DuBois, 13, are recovering in North Carolina and both have had their conditions upgraded, said Paris-based attorney Sarah Glynn, a friend and Kiwanis Club member with Philip.

Philip recently underwent surgery for his hip, pelvis and elbow, she said. He was listed in good condition Tuesday night at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, a spokesman said.

“Jamie is out of intensive care and is now in a pediatric unit,” Glynn said. He suffered severe leg and internal injuries. His condition is stable, she said.

Philip’s wife, Tammy DuBois, 42, was killed in the accident Thursday night in western North Carolina, which also claimed the life of Philip’s uncle Wendell DuBois, of Taylorsville, N.C. Three other women related to Wendell DuBois were seriously injured.

Philip and Tammy adopted Jamie last fall, and they were on a vacation visiting family and returning from dinner near Lenoir, N.C., when the van they were riding in was struck head on. Three others in the van were also hurt.

Glynn said she has had some phone contact with Philip, and he and Jamie have also been able to speak to one another on the phone, but have not seen each other since the accident.

Glynn said some of the Duboises’ family members from Maine have made the trip to North Carolina.

Members of the family’s church, Oxford Advent Christian Church on Route 26, along with members of the Kiwanis Club have shown an outpouring of support, Glynn said.
