LEWISTON – Tom Hayward of the Stanton Bird Club will lead several free bird walks during May. Walks will be held from 6 to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, May 1, 8, 15 and 22. The walks will begin at Hathorn Hall and proceed past Mount David to Riverside Cemetery. The walks will have a leisurely pace and take place on undemanding terrain.

While at the cemetery, birders will have good views of the Androscoggin River, which may hold ducks, herons, gulls, kingfishers, osprey, cormorants and perhaps even an eagle. Land birds that may be viewed include vireos, warblers, sparrows, kinglets, catbirds, swallows, thrushes and resident birds such as nuthatches, chickadees, doves, blue jays, crows and woodpeckers.

The group will meet at Hathorn Hall at 6 a.m. Participants should bring binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather. Beginner birders are welcome and the walks are open to the public.

The Stanton Bird Club is a conservation organization offering free monthly natural history programs and field trips throughout the state. Stanton welcomes new members whose dues help to support land stewardship at three sanctuaries owned and managed by the club in Lewiston and Monmouth.
