AUBURN – On Monday, May 14, the Auburn Public Library will welcome John Neff, author of “Katahdin: An Historic Journey,” who will talk about the mountain that dominates the landscape of Maine’s North Woods.

Mount Katahdin stands as an extraordinary landmark that has inspired and challenged many who have encountered it – from Native Americans whose trade routes surrounded it; to Henry David Thoreau and Governor Percival P. Baxter, who sought to conserve and preserve it; to the hundreds of people who climb its trails and float on its waterways each year.

Neff pulls from widely scattered sources to assemble the first comprehensive history of Mount Katahdin. He will trace the histories of trails and campsites, following the paths of luminaries and artists who have been touched by the mountain, and reflecting on the legacy of its conservation and preservation.

Neff is a Maine resident and retired minister. He has been an active member of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club and was a co-founder of the Friends of Baxter State Park. He has penned articles for local and regional magazines and written a book about Pemaquid Point.

The lecture, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is part of the Annie Prescott discussion series. For more information, call the library at 333-6640.
