A group of 35 soldiers from the Bangor-based 169th MP Company have been told to prepare for war.
Leaders of the Maine Army National Guard were told about four weeks ago that the company’s two platoons might be activated this summer.
The activation order has yet to come, said Maj. Gen. Bill Libby, Maine’s adjutant general.
It may not come all, but the soldiers have been getting ready.
“We have put them through all the processing and medical stuff that we normally put our soldiers through if they are mobilized and deployed,” Libby said Wednesday.
“Until we see the alert orders on these units, frankly, we don’t know what’s going on,” he said. If deployed, the soldiers would be sent overseas, but it’s unclear if that means an assignment in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere.
If the order comes, it would break with Pentagon policy that gives National Guard units a year to prepare for active duty.
“Clearly, that’s not the case here,” Libby said.
The 169th MP Company has about 91 members. However, many are still completing their training, making them ineligible for active duty, Libby said.
Of the 35 other soldiers, several have deployed before, he said.
