Issue: A March inspection revealed that the spill bucket system for the town’s three 2,000-gallon, fuel-storage tanks has failed and there is no money budgeted to correct the problem.
The scoop: The DEP says the town must correct the problem by the first week of June. The council agreed to accept Petroleum Maintenance Systems Inc. quote of $7,710 to do the work, with money to be taken from the municipal complex reserve account.
Patriots Day storm damage
The scoop: Town Manager John Hawley said latest estimates for storm damage are over $130,000. Roads damaged included North Street, Riverside Drive, and Patterson, Brown, Lane and Standpipe roads. Hawley noted that plunge pools recently installed along Standpipe saved the road from complete washout and that work on Brown Road should be coordinated with Poland.
Up next: The town will seek FEMA disaster relief funds to recoup some of the cost.
Landfill cover material
Issue: The council accepts agreement with New England Organics to provide DEP-approved organic cover for landfill cells at the transfer station.
The scoop: New England Organics will use residual material from paper processed at the recycling plant on Lewiston Junction Road to cover a three-acre cell at the transfer station. Jeff Brink with New England Organics said the cover, composed of lime, clay and paper fibers that are too short to make paper again, is the same material used by local farmers as a liming agent. The town will be paid $2 per ton for the material delivered to the site. The town then will not be required to use sand and gravel from the town pit.
