• Complaints have been received about persons spitting tobacco juice on the sidewalks. One Lewiston man said to the The Sun last evening: “It seems to me that the city ordinance relative to spitting on sidewalks should be enforced. Why not follow the plan adopted by some of the larger cities of having notices posted in conspicuous places warning persons against violating this ordinance?”
• Apples are scarce in local markets and are bringing exceptionally high prices in Liverpool. One Lewiston man who recently shipped his apples to Liverpool received $5.75 per barrel. Shippers also report a good market in Boston.

Aerial Ladder Truck No. 1 of the Lewiston Fire Department, which “conked out” early yesterday afternoon while responding to a fire call, leaving the city without the services of an aerial ladder truck, was back in operation a couple of hours later.
There was much concern when this aerial broke down, leaving the city without the services of a ladder truck in light of the serious fire dangers now existing throughout the parched city. As it is, the ladder on this truck is not working correctly. Firemen can only use it when they are able to rest the top end of it against a building.

• Lewiston-Auburn high school and junior high students are gearing up for the first bike-a-thon benefiting the Up With Kids fundrais-ing program. The 20-mile fundraiser, which is being planned and organized mostly by students, will take place, rain or shine, Sunday, May 23, on a course around the Twin Cities.
• Lewiston’s 8th District Court, the third busiest in the state in terms of the number of civil and criminal cases filed, is beginning to bend under the strain of having only one judge for most of the last three months, Clerk of Court Yvette L. Houle recently acknowledged.
