WATERFORD – The Waterford Library Association recently received a $650 grant from the Herbert H. and Carol E. Howell Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to support a pre-kindergarten program during the summer for children entering kindergarten in the fall.

The program will prepare children for the school experience. It is in place at the Waterford Memorial School. The library program will offer continuity over the summer for children already enrolled and will also welcome new participants.

The program will be held in six sessions beginning on June 28. Each session will include a welcoming activity, a gathering for a welcome song and story centering on a literacy issue, followed by the introduction of a new consonant with a related activity.

A snack for parents and children is part of each session. At each meeting participants will receive an age-appropriate children’s book for parent and child to share. Parents are encouraged to browse the library collection and use library resources during the sessions.

The program is a collaborative project between the Waterford Memorial School and the library. To enroll a child, contact Sharon Merrill, program director, at 583-6327.
