LEWISTON – Railroad Park will be officially renamed Simard/Payne Memorial Park on Wednesday to honor two Lewiston police officers killed in the line of duty.
Officer Paul J. Simard was shot and killed on July 7, 1958. Officer David R. Payne was shot and killed on July 23, 1988.
The dedication will be held at 5 p.m. at the park on Oxford Street. The officers’ family members are expected to attend, as are city officials, Lewiston police officials and members of the department’s Honor Guard.
The park connects to Auburn’s Bonney Park by a walking bridge. Bonnie Park was named in honor of Auburn police Officer Rodney “Rocky” Bonny, who was also killed in the line of duty.
The Lewiston City Council agreed to change the name of Railroad Park to Simard/Payne Memorial Park in March.
