Dear Sun Spots: I am seeking someone to repair a five-gallon porcelain crock that has cracked. Is there anyone in Maine who can help me? – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: On April 28 the Woman’s Literary Union, 19 Elm St. in Auburn, held a very successful Mother/Daughter Doll Tea. The attendance surpassed past years with everyone enjoying the stories of Mrs. Dorothy Darling Gatchell as well as walking through the rooms of the building.

Many adults had questions about the WLU and how to become a member.

The WLU consists of three groups: the basic group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 2 p.m.; the After Dark group for working adults meets on the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.; and the Garden Club meets on the third Thursday at 2 p.m., from September to May.

Fundraisers throughout the year are the Holiday Fair in November, Open House in December and the Tea in April. These fundraisers enable WLU to maintain the clubhouse in its federal style as well as provide three $500 scholarships to high school graduates.

A bit of history about the clubhouse: It is the former home of Auburn shoe magnate Horatio G. Foss and his wife, Ella. Mrs. Foss survived her husband, and she was a member of WLU when meetings were held in what is now known as the former Edward Little House on Main Street in Auburn.

Upon her death, Ella bequeathed her lovely home to WLU. It is the intention of all members to maintain this building as an aesthetic landmark for the Twin Cities. Basic dues for the year are $25; After Dark, $10, Garden Club $6. Anyone desiring to become a member may call WLU President Evelyn Larrabee at 783-8355 for more information.

This is a fun organization, and we would really love to see new members be a part of this Lewiston/Auburn gem! Many thanks to Sun Spots column readers, and we’re hoping to meet many of you at our next After Dark, Garden Club and basic group meetings. – No Name, Auburn.
