FREEPORT – Ten students from the Maine Classical Christian School attained honors from the American Classical League for their performance on the National Latin Exam.

Ninth-graders Julia Damion of Falmouth, Laura Doherty of Cumberland and Hannah Strickland of Lisbon, eighth-grader Rachel Gross of Brunswick, and seventh-grader Kate Warner of Brunswick received the highest award – the Gold Medal Summa Cum Laude – on the Level 1 exam. Fewer than 10 percent of all students who took the exam attained the award.

The Silver Medal Maxima Cum Laude was received by eighth-grader Connor O’Donnell of Freeport. Eighth-graders Jon Moody of Manchester and Connor Weeks of Readfield received the Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude awards, respectively.

On the introductory exam, Abby Bland of Windham and Ben Strickland of Lisbon, both seventh-graders, received the Outstanding Achievement Award. It is the highest award for that level.

The National Latin Exam is taken annually by more than 149,000 Latin students in the United States and 13 other countries. It is recognized by colleges and universities worldwide. Maine Classical Christian School incorporates Latin into its curriculum starting in elementary school.

In the 2007-2008 academic year, the school will offer full-time classes for fifth through 10th grades, as well as part-time classes for home-schoolers from seventh grade up. For more information, contact Academic Dean Caryn Harris at 865-6820.
