FARMINGTON – Stephen and Julie Shible awarded two scholarships Friday in memory of their daughter, Jamie Beth Shible, to Mt. Blue cheerleaders Courtney Sara Shufelt and Victoria Najarian. The presentation was held beside a crab apple tree and plaque at Mt. Blue High School that were given in memory of Jamie by friends.
Jamie, a 17-year-old junior at Mt. Blue High School, died May 26, 1997, of bacterial meningitis.
The two girls each received a $500 scholarship, with $50 given on Friday for them to use as they wish and the remainder given after completion of one semester of college.
Shufelt plans to attend the University of New England and major in social work. Najarian will attend the University of Maine at Farmington to major in biology and minor in photography.
The scholarships are given to cheerleaders because of Jamie’s involvement with the sport. A total of 19 cheerleaders have been honored over the last nine years, Stephen Shible said.
The community will also have a chance to remember Jamie this Memorial Day weekend. A video about her will be televised several times on the local Mt. Blue community access channel 11 and will be shown through BeeLine Cable.
The video was created by Stephen Shible and dedicated to his wife on Feb. 2, 2002 – what would have been their daughter’s 22nd birthday.
The video has since been refined and updated with other photos.
