JAY – Two people face several charges after a verbal dispute turned nasty and escalated to threats of bodily harm over an extension cord plugged into a neighbor’s electrical outlet, police said.
Police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier arrested Timothy Nurse, 32, and Bethany Lancaster, 34, both of Jay, Sunday on charges of misdemeanor criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and criminal threatening, Sgt. Troy Young said.
An Old Jay Hill Road resident called police to report that people were yelling at her and refusing to leave.
Fournier interviewed Nurse and Lancaster, and then was attempting to interview the neighbor when the pair became disorderly, Young said.
Fournier warned them to stop but they continued yelling, screaming and taunting the woman, he said.
Officer Stephen Wilkinson arrived to help Fournier. Meanwhile, family members of the neighbor who called police showed up, and Nurse and Lancaster started hollering and challenging them, Young said.
It turns out that someone else had given Nurse and Lancaster permission to plug their extension cord into an outlet in the woman’s residence through a window, Young said.
“She didn’t want it plugged in, and they didn’t want to unplug it, and they argued,” he said.
The pair continued to act disorderly and threatening bodily harm, Young said. Lancaster and Nurse were then both taken to Franklin County jail in Farmington.
They were released Monday on $3,000 unsecured bail each and are scheduled to appear on July 19 in 12th District Court in Farmington.
