LEWISTON – The Red Cross Donor Center at Central Maine Medical Center will be open an extra day in June as it continues seeking volunteer blood donors to help replenish depleted blood product supplies.
The donor center will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, June 4. The center will also be open at its regular Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday hours, which extend from noon until 7 p.m. The last donors of the day are received at about 6:30 p.m.
Those “presenting” to give blood will have the chance to win Red Sox and Sea Dog tickets. Free pizza and a free movie rental will be given to each potential donor. The American Red Cross has been coping with a blood shortage since the spring when collection disruptions were caused by inclement weather, electrical power disruptions and school vacation schedules. The summer season, with higher blood product demands and fewer donations, compounds the shortage.
Donors can contribute without an appointment on a walk-in basis or they may schedule an appointment by calling 795-2260 or 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. The donor center is located on the ground floor of the CMMC Memorial Wing.
