Dear Sun Spots: My uncle is looking for a product called Poutin Rappe. It’s a French recipe that consists of potato balls with pork in the middle. They come two to a can. Years ago, he could get them in Rumford and more recently, in Bangor. They don’t seem to be available now. If anyone knows where we might be able to locate these, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to assist us here. Thank you. – Pam Newton, Jay.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots has located the following recipe online at www.acadian.org, and perhaps this is similar to the one you are seeking. We hope your uncle and the rest of your family will enjoy trying these out:
Poutines Rapees: Ingredients: ½ pound of fatty, salted pork, 10 potatoes, 4 potatoes cooked, mashed and seasoned with salt and pepper. Method: Soak the salted pork overnight to remove the excess salt. Cut into cubes. Grate the uncooked potatoes and extract the water from the grated potatoes by squeezing them in a cloth. Mix the grated, dried potatoes with the mashed, seasoned potatoes. Add seasoning if necessary. Make a hole in the center of the potato ball with your thumb an add a tablespoon of the cubed salted pork. Close the hole and roll the poutine in white flour and then gently lower them in a large pot filled with boiling salt water. Keep the water boiling and simmer the poutines for two to three hours. Serve hot with butter, salt, pepper or as a dessert with sugar and molasses. Makes six poutines.
Dear Sun Spots: You have helped me many times in the past. I hope you can please help again.
I enjoy the Bentana Wiggly puzzle books, but I am having a hard time finding them. I tried to contact Kappa Publishing in Ohio but found they are no longer listed.
Is there another company that publishes this puzzle book? Or, do you or a column reader know where I might locate them?
Many thanks for all you do. – Gail L., Minot.
Answer: Contact Kappa Publishing at 6198 Butler Pike, Suite 200, Blue Bell PA 19422, 215-643-6385. Alternatively, you might also consider e-mailing them at [email protected]. Dear Sun Spots: Thank you for your help in the past. We ask that you please publish our letter again this year.
We are seeking crafters for the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church Scholarship Committee’s annual craft fair. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, Route 26, Paris. Tables are available to rent for $15 a table. Unfortunately, this year we have to raise our price to help cover the cost of a police officer for security during the fair. For more information please call Marian Culbert at 743-9832. Thank you. – V.R., Otisfield.
Dear Sun Spots: Due to the recent fire at Village Inn, the Veterans Council has received many inquiries regarding the name applications left there for the weekly drawing to have their name engraved on a name panel at Veterans Memorial Park.
Village Inn has assured us that the applications left there were not destroyed, and the weekly drawings have continued.
Another inquiry has been when would the next name panel go up in the park. We just unveiled one on May 26 and cannot give a precise date one the next one until it is complete. As soon as we have 52 names, that will complete it.
Again, we want to thank Norm Vallee of the Village Inn for his generosity in caring for and helping the veterans.
Applications may be obtained by calling Gerry at 782-6621 or Bert at 786-2305. Looking forward to hearing from you. – Gerry N. Cain, L & A Veterans Council, Lewiston.
