POLAND – Community members from SAD 17 and School Union 29 interested in increasing the use of healthier and local foods in school lunch programs will host a potluck supper at 6 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Excelsior Grange, 446 Harris Hill Road. Guests are asked to bring a dish prepared from food grown in Maine to share with others. All interested are encouraged to attend.
The newly formed group, consisting of teachers, farmers, parents and groups such as the Healthy Maine Partnership, joined to encourage healthier choices in school cafeteria meals and to teach young people the importance of the local food supply system to their well being.
Amy Winston from Coastal Enterprises Inc. will be the guest speaker. Winston has been a leader in promoting local foods through the Farm 2 School programs in the Lincoln County area and travels all over Maine to assist others in starting similar programs.
Future plans include connecting farmers with local schools, the establishment of school gardens, a harvest supper and food-tasting events at area schools.
