NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A downtown shop owner was shot to death outside his downtown clothing store Saturday as thousands attended a festival just blocks away on the New Haven Green.

Ricardo Beamon, 28, was standing outside his Yuppy Boutique on Chapel Street when he was shot in the chest during an encounter with a group of teens, police said.

The shooting happened during the Areyto Latino Festival, but police said there was no apparent link between the shooting and that event.

Sgt. Luiz Casanova told the New Haven Register that there was a very large police contingent on duty in the area Saturday to make sure the festival went smoothly.

Casanova said the motive was unclear. He said police were looking for “one shooter” but “multiple suspects.”

Witnesses told police the teens jumped into a red, two-door car, which sped away. Police later found that car, but no arrests had been made Sunday morning.

“It’s a loss for everyone,” said Tammy Edwards, Beamon’s cousin. “He was doing so good and he actually wanted to open up another store downtown. It’s going to be a loss for the community as a whole.”

The homicide was the second in the city this year.
