PALMYRA, Maine (AP) – An early morning house fire in this central Maine town claimed one life Saturday.

Stephen Micheller, 49, was killed when fire engulfed his single-story dwelling on Pittsfield Road, the state Fire Marshal’s Office said.

A passerby reported the fire at about 3 a.m., and the building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The body of Micheller, who lived alone, was recovered from the rubble in the basement shortly after dawn. His dog also died in the fire.

Three fire marshal investigators were called to the scene, but officials said the intense fire collapsed the entire structure into the basement and it is unlikely that the cause will be determined.
