LITTLETON (AP)- A 50-year-old motorcyclist from Hodgdon died Sunday in a Bangor Hospital of injuries suffered in a crash on U.S. 1 that also claimed the life of his passenger.

A car whose driver fell asleep at the wheel crossed the center line at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and struck Roger Lewis’s motorcycle, state police said.

Lewis’ passenger, Joyce McGuire, 50, of Houlton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis was airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in critical condition and died Sunday, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

The driver of the car, Burnam Morrell, 54, of Caribou, suffered minor injuries. His passenger, John Hede, 77, of Caribou, was admitted to Houlton Regional Hospital.

After hitting the motorcycle, Morrell’s car continued on and struck a hearse that was returning from a burial.

The driver of the hearse, Tony Bowers, 48, of Island Falls, was treated and released. The hearse was demolished.
