SUMNER – A home at 71 Lower Sumner Hill Road was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon, along with all the belongings of its owner and her tenant. There were no injuries.
Neither Kelly Bragg nor her renter, Laurie Sabat, were not home when the blaze erupted around 2 p.m., Assistant Chief Wally Litchfield said Monday night. Sabat is believed to have reported the fire when she discovered it on her arrival, he said.
The small two-story residence was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, and the roof collapsed soon after.
An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office will inspect the debris Tuesday to determine the cause of the fire and where it started, Litchfield said.
The home was insured, but an estimate of the loss was not available Monday, he said.
Sumner Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Buckfield, Canton, Peru and Hebron. Tankers hauled water from a dry hydrant at Labrador Pond outlet and emptied it into a large canvas tank to be pumped up the long, narrow driveway.
Sumner Fire Chief Bob Stewart used the Oxford County emergency response vehicle to coordinate communications.
“By using the command center, messages can be sent directly to the personnel involved, which creates less confusion and more efficiency at the site,” said Dan Milligan, director of Med-Care Ambulance which runs the center.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was also at the scene to offer assistance.
Bragg, who arrived on the scene after the fire was out, and Sabat are staying with Sabat’s mother temporarily, Litchfield said.
