DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Ryan Flaherty of Vanderbilt, a graduate of Deering High School in Portland, was one of nine players chosen to fill out USA Baseball’s national team on Wednesday.

Long Beach State infielder Danny Espinosa, Texas Tech outfielder Roger Kieschnick and Santa Clara catcher Tommy Medica were on the U.S. team that won the gold medal at last year’s FISU World Championships in Havana, Cuba.

The other six players picked to fill out the 20-man roster were Flaherty, RHP Ryan Berry (Rice), OF Jordan Danks (Texas), IF-OF Logan Forsythe (Arkansas), RHP-IF Jordy Mercer (Oklahoma State), C Preston Paramore (Arizona State).

Flaherty, a sophomore, is the son of University of Southern Maine baseball coach Ed Flaherty.

“We are very pleased with how the final roster has come together over the past couple of weeks, and it is always rewarding for our staff to see the strong mix of USA Baseball alumni who were selected,” said Eric Campbell, the organization’s general manager of national teams.

Flaherty finished the season with a school-record 35-game hitting streak. The second-team All-American batted .381 with four home runs, 23 doubles and 57 RBIs.

No starting shortstop made fewer errors in the Southeastern Conference than Flaherty.

The U.S. team will face clubs in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, which includes a team in Sanford, to prepare for international competition later this summer.
