LISBON – The Lisbon Library Department has announced the kick-off celebration of the summer reading program titled the “Mystery Garden” with the Little Red Wagon Touring Theatre’s production of “Don’t Count Your Chickens Until They Cry Wolf” at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Lisbon Teen Center.
The Little Red Wagon presents a full production with sets, costumes and giant puppets accompanied by a combination of modern music, ancient wisdom and today’s wit.
Highlights of the show will include the famous race of the tortoise and hare and a soft shoe number by the fox and a chorus line of sheep. Preregistration is necessary.
Following the performance, the audience will walk over to the Lisbon Falls Library and get started on the “Mystery Garden” summer reading program. The program is available free to Lisbon children entering grades kindergarten through six in the fall with valid library cards. Children from surrounding towns would need to obtain a non-resident library card, available for a fee.
The “Mystery Garden” theme was chosen to incorporate a local family’s gift of a children’s garden to the children of Lisbon with the summer reading program. The garden will be located outside the Lisbon Library Department’s Children’s Room and will be dedicated in memory of the family’s parents.
Each Tuesday throughout the summer, children will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room for a special activity, to complete their reading logs, to earn prizes and to complete a craft. Literature-based activities and special guests are planned to entertain the children throughout the six weeks.
The culminating activity will be an ice cream social on Monday, Aug. 6. All participants are encouraged to attend. Certificates and paperback books will be awarded to those who qualify.
