LISBON – Twenty nine volunteers were recently awarded with the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of volunteer service in the Lisbon school system.

Over 150 people enjoyed a traditional diner menu prepared by Lisbon’s own “Arnold”, Jim Damsgaard, Nutrition Director for the schools at JD’s diner. Lisbon schools, Lisbon Community School, Philip W. Sugg Middle School and Lisbon High School staff hosted the annual event. The theme was the 1950s. Guests were treated to an evening filled with entertainment by “Just Pretenders” Karen Dall, Donna Rimiller and Laurie Adams as well as a play by the Middle School Actors performing “The Actors’ Challenge directed by Jackie Young

Community Resource and Volunteer Coordinator, Monica Millhime described the volunteers as a galvanized workforce at the Lisbon schools. Volunteers contributed close to 12,000 hours of service assisting with the needs of students, she said.

Gold awards for over 500 hours of service went to: Amy Austin, 992; Tara Grondin 671; and Charlene Castrence, 538.

Silver awards for 250 hours or more went to: Marilyn Curtis, 300; Lisa Caron, 278; Karen Whitney, 268; Cheryl Gardner, 267; Jim Millhime, 267; and Traci Austin for 262 hours.

Bronze awards for 100 hours or more were presented to: Heidi Dinsmore, 246; Candace Barrett, 240; Roland Grondin, 208; Michelle Huston, 190; Janice Grondin, 186; Carol Day, 154; George Caron, 126; Annette Clark, 137; Jennifer Willey, 134; Aspen Mikella, 131; Cathy Williams, 122; Patricia Thebeau, 111; Barbara Reid, 109; Connie Fowler, 107; Thom Clark, 103; Janice Huston, 103; Adam Thebeau, Sr., 103; and Kathi Yergin, 102.

A special recognition and moment of remembrance was dedicated to the family of the late Kevin Curtis. Curtis was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

In his honor for the countless hours of dedication and commitment, a Volunteer memorial bench will be erected in the fall at Lisbon Community School.

Established in 2003, the award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering.

It was created by the USA Freedom Corps in 2002, and called on every American to make a lifelong commitment to volunteer service.
