Parade, other activities put off until July 21
NORWAY – The Fourth of July parade and activities set for this weekend has been postponed until July 21.
Organizers of the event, which includes a parade, auction, dance and other activities, say the town’s honorary parade marshal, former Selectman Bobby Walker, has to be out of town so the event’s rain date of July 21 was put into place.
“Everything stays the same,” said Leslie Dean of L.F. Pike & Son clothing store on Main Street, a member of the Norway Business Association that is sponsoring the event.
The parade, led by Walker, will set off at 2 p.m. from the St. Catherine’s Church parking lot and continue west along Main Street to Advertiser Square. Organizations including Scouts, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and others are expected to march in the parade. Peter Gogin, a disc jockey, will play music from the back of a tow truck provided by John Russell and Towing
A skatepark team also is expected to perform.
Activities for children and adults will be ongoing throughout the day including an auction at 5 p.m. in the Beal Street parking lot and a street dance beginning at 8 p.m. in the same parking lot. Child care will be available for adults who want to stroll along Main Street and do some shopping.
A “pop-a-balloon for the Fourth” will be ongoing throughout the day with merchants from Norway and surrounding communities participating in the coupon promotions that will hang from balloon.
The street dance at 8 p.m. will be hosted by DJTJ Tom Williams.
There will be doll and bicycle clinics, a “lockup” fundraiser and other activities during the day.
“There’s so much going on. We’d like to see it become an annual event,” said Danita Cronin, treasurer of the Norway Business Association.
Norway has not held Fourth of July events in 31 years and a street dance in at least 10 years, Cronin said.
