MEXICO – A search is under way to find Mexico’s oldest, most distinguished resident.

“Who is our oldest citizen? We need to know,” Town Manager John Madigan told selectmen at Wednesday night’s board meeting in the municipal building.

Not that the nominated person will be awarded the Boston Post Cane, which the town displays at the town office. Instead, town officials usually engrave the name of the town’s oldest citizen on a plaque on display with the cane, then present a dedication and plaque to the recipient.

Selectmen’s secretary and town office assistant Sheryl Briggs said Thursday afternoon that officials usually also give flowers to women who are named the town’s oldest. This year, though, it’s up to selectmen to decide.

The deadline for nominations is Sept. 7. Briggs said nominations must be in the form of a letter noting special qualities about the person.

A Mexico resident who is living in a nursing home out of town is still considered a Mexico resident and is eligible to enter. Provided nominations are received, the recipient will be named at Mexico’s Night of Appreciation on Sept. 18.
