AUBURN – The National Honor Society at Edward Little High School held its annual induction ceremony on May 15.
This year’s inductees were led into the gym by the student speakers and officers of the National Honor Society. They came marching in to the strains of Purcell’s “Trumpet Voluntary” played by both Matt Brodeur and Steve Cyr. Kelly Davis, accompanied by Richard Rau, sang, “Panis Angelicus.”
President of the ELHS group, JoAnna Hughes, welcomed the guests and introduced Principal James Miller. He addressed the parents and reminded them that the inductees fulfilled all of the four characteristics of the National Honor Society to a high degree.
Hughes then introduced guest speaker Dr. Zark Van Zandt, outgoing dean of Lewiston-Auburn College USM, who had been an advisor to the National Honor Society when he began his career in education. Student speakers then took over the program. Andrew Brodsky gave an account of the history of NHS, and Tina Williamson summarized the group activities for the year, including the two kiddie nights.
The four characteristics of the National Honor Society (scholarship, leadership, service and character) were then explained by Sucheta Desai, Christopher Dunn, Victoria Tanous and Molly Platz. Each of the speakers lit a candle symbolizing each attribute. The vice president, Tina Williamson, lit the fifth candle on the candelabra to symbolize a person who has all four characteristics.
