WINTHROP – The Augusta Red Sox nipped the Topsham Knights 5-4 in a 13-inning marathon Sunday in the Central Maine Men’s Senior Baseball League.

The stage was set after two outs and nobody on. Bob Cochran singled, followed by a hit to right by Mike House. Josh Nichols then drilled a walk-off single to end the lengthy contest.

The Sox spotted the Knights 2 runs in the top of the first, then tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth. Trailing 3-1 in the last of the seventh, the Sox rallied on a double by Eric Palleschi and a triple by Brett Witherell.

The Knights scored a run in the eighth to make it 4-2. But the Sox came back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. Jim Morris doubled and Cochran singled. A fielder’s choice scored Morris, then a walk to Nichols put runners on first and second with one out. After a double steal, Cochran tallied the tying run on a passed ball.

Morris got the win, hurling the final 7 innings. Randy Ridley took the loss.

Al Swain and Mike Carter were repeat hitters for the Knights, as were Palleschi and Cochran for the Sox.

The Sox will host the West Paris Westies Sunday at 9 a.m. at Winthrop High School. The Knights travel to Nokomis High School to face the Goody’s Guys.
