OXFORD – Sumner Sessions knows how to bring a crowd to its feet.

The Norway driver steadily worked his way into contention in the final 10 laps, then made a thrilling last-lap pass on Tommy Tompkins to win the Hilltop Pools & Spas 100 for Strictly Stocks on Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

The Strictly Stock racers completed all 100 laps without a caution for the second time this season.

“That was pretty spectacular,” said Sessions. “Lapped cars provided quite a challenge tonight. I couldn’t get by Skippy (Tripp) there for what seemed like forever. I tried and tried and finally made the traffic work for me.”

Tompkins hung on for second, while Glen Henderson finished third. Tripp and former Wiscassett Raceway regular Dave Brannon completed the top five.

Tompkins appeared to have the race sewn up with 10 laps to go after passing Dave Brannon on lap 82. The veteran driver from Mexico accepted defeat in gracious fashion.

“You can’t have them run off any better than that,” Tompkins said. “That’s what the fans come to see, and I’m happy to run second to a clean driver like Sumner. I saw him in the mirror earlier, I held on as best I could but Larry (Emerson, a lapped car) was running me pretty hard.”

Eight of the 22 starters finished on the lead lap, while 17 were running at the finish.

Travis Adams, Don Mooney, Guy Childs and Tom Averill were also feature winners Saturday.

Childs recorded his second victory of 2007 in the first of two 20-lap Outlaws battles. The Turner driver led wire-to-wire in the caution-free affair, while John Patria claimed second and Jerry Goss was third.

Childs wrapped up the Grand Slam title with his strong run, a special series-within-a-series for the entry-level class.

Averill picked up his first win in the second Outlaw tilt, taking the lead on lap six from Randy Robitaille. Keith Landry started ninth and steadily worked his way to second at the finish, while Steve Moon came from 10th to claim third.

Adams continued his stellar 2007 season by posting his fifth victory in Late Models in the final tune-up for the TD Banknorth 250. The two-time and defending champion started 16th, worked his way into the top 10 by lap 10, then went three-wide on lap 14 to move into the top five. Six circuits later, Adams blew past Scott Luce for the lead and held off a late challenge from Luce.

Adams could now be called the new version of Jeff Taylor, the last man to dominate Oxford’s top division.

“This car is one special piece,” Adams said. “It’s been running just perfectly the last few weeks, and next week is the big dance. I know these 40-lap features are a far cry from 250, but if we can get in the show without any problems, we’ll definitely have a car capable of winning.”

Donnie Wentworth started ninth and worked his way to place second, while Turner’s Brad Hammond finished third. Former track champion Ricky Rolfe ran among the leaders the entire distance to claimed fourth, while Luce faded slightly in the closing laps for fifth.

Mooney returned to Victory Lane in a wild contest for the Mini Stock division. He passed Shane Kaherl on lap 25 and survived a late challenge from Jim Childs. Just when it looked like Childs would steal another win late in the race, his car fell off the pace with mechanical trouble.
