Recently the Sun Journal published Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care’s 2007 annual report. In addition to the annual report, a supplemental page featured many stories about the work we do at AHSCC was also published.

One article featured our community partners in oral health. One of Head Start’s federal mandates is that the children receive an examination by a dentist. There were no private dental practices in Androscoggin County accepting new pre-school children on MaineCare. Fortunately, there are three oral health centers that are accepting children receiving MaineCare. They are: The B-Street Dental Clinic, the new Western Maine Dental Clinic in New Auburn and the Community Dental Center located at 177 Main St. in Lewiston.

The article inadvertently left out Community Dental. I write to point out this oversight and acknowledge the fine work being done by Community Dental. They provide oral health services not only for children, but also for adults (on a sliding scale payment basis).

This is of major importance, as our parents, especially pregnant women, can receive important services with reasonable payments. In addition, Community Dental provides educational opportunities for our parents and staff on the importance of good oral health, an integral part of one’s overall health.

Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care depends on, and is deeply indebted to, all of our community partners. We are especially appreciative to Androscoggin County United Way, which provides support to both AHSCC and Community Dental.
