Fall-out boy?

Yankees manager Joe Torre called this his toughest season in his 12 years as manager. He told ESPN.com, “My security blanket is the players, because they care and they try. Sometimes they lose direction, but that’s been the thing I cling to all the time – the baseball aspect of it.” It’s too bad this guy is going to be the fall guy if the Yankees don’t make the playoffs. Consultant for the Red Sox, anyone?

Double trouble

Phil Mickelson bogeyed the 18th hole at the Scottish Open twice on Sunday, one to force a playoff and onen to give away the title. Let me guess, it was your wrist, right?

Broke-neck mountain

While the injury itself is in no way funny, a man had his neck broken at Yankee Stadium last week after a fan, rows above him, fell over and tumbled multiple rows in the steep top deck. Reportedly, the fan was drunk and was whisked away by his friends, with no apology. Hey, maybe Jason Giambi was apologizing for this in advance.

Right now, please

Ron Artest, subject of many trade rumors this offseason, says that he wants to retire as a Sacramento King. No report on whether the Maloof brothers have requested that he retires now.

More of the same

Speaking of Artest, the league has suspended the defensive specialist and his former teammate Stephen Jackson for seven games due to personal run-ins with the law. Artest will lose $471,000 in salary, while Jackson will lose $425,000. Pays to be a thug, huh?

Blackjack!

Vinny Testaverde announced that he will return to the Patriots this season, which will be his 21st. This must be Testaverde’s version of gambling, hoping he can bring in a paycheck every week without ever having to take the field. Smart, old man. Smart.

Back to L.A.

Derek Fisher asked to be released from the Jazz to help tend to his ailing daughter. The bright lights of Hollywood must have distracted him when he decided to return to the Lakers. Are there better doctors in L.A.? Or is Jerry Sloan that horrible to play for?
