BANGOR (AP) – A Bangor man was arrested Friday on a murder charge in the slaying of an Ellsworth man whose body was found last week in a ditch in Amherst.

John Turner, 34, was arrested by state police detectives at Acadia Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Bangor, and was taken to the Hancock County Jail.

Turner is expected to make his initial appearance Monday in Hancock County Superior Court on the charge arising from the shooting death of Tad Howard, 27, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

The results of an autopsy were withheld last week and authorities revealed for the first time Friday that Howard had been shot. McCausland also said Howard and Turner knew each other but decined to elaborate.

Howard’s body was found July 9 and police immediately labeled the death suspicious. Investigators later classified the case as a homicide but said they did not believe anyone else was in danger.
