SACO – Tom Hird hit a home run to lead Elliot Avenue Little League of Lewiston to an 8-7 victory over Camden-Rockport on the opening day of the 11-year-old Little League State Tournament.

Evan Bourassa allowed seven hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort. Bourassa, Alex Small, Ethan Melvin and Colton Bernier led the offense, while Evan Gosselin played solid in the field.

Elliot returns to action today against Hampden at 2 p.m.

Monmouth wins Zone II Legion title

MONMOUTH – Justin Denbow pitched a two-hit masterpiece, and David Ricker belted a three-run homer as Monmouth ran away with a 7-1 win over Madison in the Zone II championship game.

Denbow hurled 78 pitches over eight innings, fanned six and allowed his first earned run in 37 innings pitched this season. Travis Harwood came on in the ninth and set Madison down in order to seal the win.

Ricker’s home run capped a six-run third inning for Monmouth, which finished unbeaten on the season at 23-0. Ricker, Ethan Guerette, Tavis Hasenfus and Mike Eaton combined for eight of Monmouth’s 10 hits.

Brad Beauregard and Matt Hisler each had one hit for Maidson (16-7).
