Guided tours

BETHEL – For the second year in a row, Bethel Historical Society life member and historian David Jones will conduct guided tours of portions of Bethel Hill Village each Saturday during August.

Jones will provide the background on the founding of the town and the reasons why people from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and southern Maine established the village in the 1770s. All walking tours will begin at 11 a.m. (rain or shine) at the fire bell tower on the north end of the village common.

Young readers

DIXFIELD – The Young Readers’ Discussion Group will meet at 6 p.m. today at the Ludden Memorial Library. The selection chosen by middle school readers is “How I Survived Being a Girl” by Wendelin Van Draanen. High school students are reading “The Burn Journals” by Brent Runyon and will discuss it at the meeting.

Player reading

BETHEL – Western Mountain Senior Players will participate in an evening of “Mainly Humorous” as part of the week-long second annual Maine Performing Arts Festival at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the Trustees Auditorium, Gould Academy.

Players will do a reading with the festival’s professional actors and will do an encore of three of their comedy plays. The public is invited and admission is free. For more information, call Lynn at 824-0080.

Class luncheon

RUMFORD – Stephens High School Class of 1945 will hold a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Route 2 Diner. Call Connie at 364-8785 or Muriel at 545-2709 if planning to attend.

Class meeting

DIXFIELD -The Mexico High School Class of 1959 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Front Porch Cafe.

Ice cream social

BETHEL – Western Mountains Senior College will join in Bethel Historical Society’s Sudbury Canada Days at an ice cream social/make-your-own sundae on the back porch of the society’s Robinson House from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

There will be lawn games of croquet, badminton and others and prizes awarded to senior winners. It is free for WMSC members; small donation requested from others. For more information, call 824-0508

Space available

DIXFIELD – Space is still available for individuals or groups to participate in the Dixfield Main Street Outdoor Market. The annual festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, in the downtown area. Fashion show

EAST DIXFIELD – Mystic Valley Grange will present a fashion show and tea at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. A 6:30 supper will precede the open meeting and program. Fifteen models will present fashions, old and new. Miss Maine Teenage Sweetheart, Hilary White, will model her pageant gown worn at last week’s Nashville pageant. The public is welcome.

Dog classes

PHILLIPS – SAD 58 Adult and Community Education will offer a basic dog obedience course with instructor Carol Rogers from 9 to 10:30 a.m. beginning Saturday, Aug. 11, and running Saturdays for eight weeks at the Phillips NorthStar Ambulance Bay, Route 142.

The cost is $55 a canine and there is room for four dogs a session with a max of two sessions if numbers allow.
