RUMFORD – Voices of the Valley, a vocal competition, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Mountain Valley High School.
The competition is open to all residents in the River Valley area. A donation of $10, nonrefundable, will be accepted from each contestant. There will be three categories: youth, age 12; ages 13 to 18; and ages 19 and older. Prizes will be awarded to the top two winners of each category -first, $100, and second, $50. The winners will then compete for the $200 cash prize and the Voice of the Valley trophy.
Auditions will begin at 9 a.m. and the top six contestants in each category will continue on to the evening show at 6 p.m. Contestants will need to prepare two songs, one for the audition and one for the show. The final three will be asked to sing the song they auditioned.
Master of Ceremonies will be Duane Glover and judges will be Judith Kuhn, Thea Dunn, Connie Porter, Tammy Schmersal-Burgess and Hugh Rowley.
Entry forms and rules may be picked up at the following locations: Davis Florist, Congress Street, Glover’s Service Station and Erik Designs, Rumford; Tah Dah Hair Salon, Mexico; and Franklin Savings Bank, Rumford and Mexico. The entry forms need to be returned to Cheryl Dickson at Erik Designs no later than Friday, Aug. 17.
Admission to the auditions and competition will be donations of $5 in advance or $6 the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased at Franklin Savings Bank, Rumford and Mexico, Davis Florist, Erik Designs and the Canton Town Office.
Concessions will be available during the show. From 4 to 5:30 p.m. there will be a barbecue, with hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, corn on the cob and a drink, at the high school. Cost will be $5. Strawberry shortcake will be the featured dessert for $2.
A progressive 50/50 raffle is under way and will be drawn at the event. Tickets can be purchased at Davis Florist, Erik Designs, Franklin Savings Bank and Glover’s Service Station.
All proceeds will benefit Tammy MacDonald, of Mexico, who is undergoing treatment for colon cancer.
