GREENE – Volunteers from out-of-state come every year to do mission work for the Rural Community Action Ministry, repairing and improving the homes of neighbors in need.

In June, Trinity Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, Ohio, came to assist Helen Johnson of Greene by painting her home. Johnson is a longtime community volunteer herself. Her family has always been there for neighbors in need. Her late husband, “Stubby,” is remembered for his devotion and example of community commitment through his wrecker service.

In July, Church of the Transfiguration of Pittsford, N.Y., also worked on Johnson’s home and built two access/egress ramps for two other local families.

The two groups coming in August are Christ Clarion Presbyterian Church, also from New York, and Grace Congregational United Church of Christ from Vermont. They will work on rural clients’ home safety issues and make improvements.

To round out the summer mission group projects, Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church of New Hampshire will return to help construct an extra bedroom for a family consisting of two adults and six children.

Forty-one local volunteers have been with RCAM for some time. They help with services that RCAM offers. The seven board members and 17 committee members are a part of the RCAM.

This year it has also had five volunteeers from Kents Hill High School help clients and eight resident physicians from Central Maine Medical Center came in July to help residents in Greene.
