CHESTERVILLE – A couple camping out in the Allagash learned Monday morning that a fire destroyed their home and two vehicles Saturday night, Chesterville Fire Chief David Archer said. The property was not insured.
Bruce and Julie Hall left Friday for their trip to northern Maine, he said, and called home early Monday and learned about the fire and were returning to the area. The couple had talked to the American Red Cross already, he said, and they were going to put the Halls up for three days.
The fire at the mobile home with an addition and two attached smaller wooden buildings at 180 Sand Pond Road was reported by neighbors about 9:22 p.m. Saturday, Archer said.
Firefighters from Chesterville, Farmington, New Sharon, Wilton, East Dixfield and Vienna responded to try to stop the blaze.
The fire was well under way before firefighters arrived, Archer said. The front end of the trailer had burned and only two walls were standing.
“The fire burned hard, hot and fast,” Archer said.
Not only did it take the home, it destroyed a pickup truck and a car, he said.
Archer said he was at the scene Monday morning with investigator Chris Standford of the Office of the State Fire Marshal trying to determine a cause. The cause is undetermined at this point, he said, and will remain that way due to the extensive damage.
