LEWISTON – A number of programs and courses designed for individuals who wish to advance in their job or to start in a new career will start soon at Lewiston Adult Education.
A new program for those looking to enter the welding field will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 28. “Introduction to Industrial Welding” will provide an overview of basic shielded metal arc welding, cover industrial applications such as MIG and TIG, as well as flux cored welding. The 15-week program will combine classroom instruction with hands-on experience of each welding type.
There will be three options available to help adults get some of the most sought-after skills needed for today’s office environment. The clerical certificate will provide training in computer literacy, keyboarding, principles of accounting, business writing, effective communications and general office practice.
The accounting assistant certificate program will expand training to include business applications for Excel, QuickBooks and more advanced accounting.
The medical office certificate will focus on the skills needed for medical office support, including medical terminology, billing and coding. Evening classes will begin this month and September, and registrations are being taken.
Computer training for those needing to advance their technology skills will be available. From basic instruction through advanced software applications, Lewiston Adult Education’s computer classes provide interactive instruction. Evening courses, as well as one-day programs, will be offered this fall.
Courses will also be offered to explore, learn or develop more skills in a variety of trade and career areas. Evening classes will be taught by professional trades people and will allow for hands-on experience.
Courses such as “Automotive Repair,” “Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting” and “Woodworking” will start during the last week of August.
A Certified Nursing Assistant certificate program will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program will combine classroom instruction with clinical experience. The program will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 11, with admissions interviews and assessments scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 4 and 6.
The WorkReady training program will help adults prepare for the demands of the changing workplaces. The 60-hour program will focus on employer expectation, working as part of a team, problem-solving and effective communication.
Individuals will develop a career plan suited for their needs and define the steps needed to meet their career goals.
Successful completion of the program will result in an employer-endorsed credential. Training will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the B Street Community Center.
The next program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 17. Interested adults should contact the Lewiston CareerCenter for more information and application materials.
