WATERFORD – Oxford County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Tim Ontengco announced the identity of a Massachusetts man who died Sunday afternoon after swimming in Keoka Lake.

Richard Whitfield, 65, of Attleboro suffered a heart attack while swimming, he said.

“He motioned he was in some distress,” and his family helped him out of the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until medical professionals arrived, Ontengco said.

Whitfield was pronounced dead at Bridgton Hospital.

The heart attack occurred at Whitfield’s cottage off Howard Trail.
