The Livermore Public Library plant sale, held for the first time this year, is expected to become an annual event. The sale took place in the old Community Building.
Library sale blooms
LIVERMORE – The first plant sale held by the Livermore Public Library was a great fundraiser and is expected to become an annual event. Plant lovers from all over converged to support the library by purchasing new additions to their home gardens.
Through donations from community members’ gardens, the sale blossomed to more than 600 pots of perennials and at least 40 shrubs. Planting tips and gardening stories filled the air as did the scent of pink lily-of-the-valley.
Customers and volunteers also stopped to reminisce about the past life of the Community Building, where the sale was held. Built in 1915, the building was a school for more than 55 years and many memories and aspirations were formed there.
Exceeding even sale organizer Sarah Delaney’s expectations, the unanimous consensus from the volunteers at the finish of the day was that this would become an annual event.
As a perk of the sale, some locations in the community benefited in other ways. In the week following the plant sale, extra perennials were planted to improve public gardens at the Livermore Town Office, the Livermore Public Library and the Livermore Elementary School. And the old Community Building did not go unthanked. A foundation planting of orange day lilies and green hostas was installed on voting day, with the hope that more can be added to the town landmark in the future.
