PORTLAND – The Portland Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats have finished the regular season tied for second place in the Eastern League’s Northern Division. The Sea Dogs will host a one-game playoff today at 6 p.m. to determine which team advances to the Eastern League playoffs.
The top two teams in each division qualify for postseason play.
Both the Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats dropped their regular-season finale Monday. New Britain Rock Cats pounded out 16 hits to complete a five-game sweep with an 11-7 victory over Portland. Starter Chris Smith allowed 13 hits and 10 runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The ticket office will open today at 8 a.m. Tickets are priced the same as regular-season tickets.
Portland and New Hampshire split their 28 games this season. The Sea Dogs are hosting the game as a result of scoring more runs in the series (151-127).
The winner will advance to take on the Trenton Thunder in the Eastern League Northern Division Championship. The playoffs get under way Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Trenton. The Erie SeaWolves and Akron Aeroes square off in the Southern Division Series.
Should the Sea Dogs beat the Fisher Cats, they will host Games 3 and Game 4 (if necessary) at Hadlock Field on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8.
