LEWISTON – Preparations are under way for the first shoeworkers reunion, to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Museum L-A in the Bates Mill Complex. All current and former Lewiston-Auburn shoeworkers are invited to attend the free event.

The afternoon will feature handsewing demonstrations, exhibits, tours of the museum and opportunity for socializing. Refreshments will be served. Museum L-A staff and volunteers will be on hand to accept donations of shoeworking related memorabilia for the museum’s collection.

Museum L-A is looking to expand its exhibits related to the local shoe shops and their workers and welcomes donations such as tools, photographs and company newsletters.

Former shoeworkers serving on the Planning Committee include Roger Nadeau. Richard Courtemanche, Irene Harvey, Roland Landry and Roland Martel.

Anyone interested in attending should reserve a seat by calling Museum L-A at 333-3881 during its regular hours of operation – Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A limited number of seats will be available. Reservations will be accepted through Saturday, Oct. 13.

The reunion is Museum L-A’s first step in developing a Shoeworkers Oral History and Photo Documentary project – patterned after its successful Millworkers Oral History and Photo Documentary project.
