New council a guarantee
Two incumbents, Mayor Gilbert, try for return engagement

LEWISTON – Five of seven City Council seats will have new faces come January, with only two incumbents trying for another two-year term.

Mayor Larry Gilbert will return to office for a full two year term – barring a write-in campaign. No other candidate filed nominating petitions to challenge him.

Of the sitting city councilors, only incumbents Stavros Mendros and Ron Jean are seeking re-election.

“Some of the people are running because they want to see the city go in a different direction,” Mendros said Friday. “I think that’s what Councilor Jean and I have been trying to make happen for some time, and why we came out on the same side of so many votes on the City Council.”

Mendros, who represents Ward 1, will face local attorney Thomas Peters, the former chairman of the Lewiston Planning Board.

Jean will face Denis Theriault for the Ward 4 seat.

Incumbent Mark Paradis announced Thursday he would not seek another term. Harry Millikin III found out about Paradis’ decision Friday and decided to run for the Ward 6 seat. He took out a nomination petition at noon Friday and filed them before 3 p.m. He’ll face Elizabeth Dube in that race.

In Ward 3, Larry A. Poulin will face David A. Vincent. The winner will replace outgoing Councilor Lillian O’Brien.

Robert Reed won’t have any competition for the Ward 7 seat being vacated by Councilor Normand Rousseau. Reed has been a member of the city’s Solid Waste Task Force, the group reviewing a possible landfill management deal with Casella Solid Waste.

Two of the seats feature tough three-way races. In Ward 2, council critic Joseph Roy faces Douglas Foss and Nelson Peters, the brother of Ward 1 candidate Thomas Peters.

The Ward 2 winner will replace Renee Bernier, the current council chairwoman.

Ward 5 features a similar race, with five-time mayoral candidate Charles Soule, Tina Bailey and David Hughes. The winner will replace outgoing Councilor Paul Samson.
