Dear Sun Spots: I read your column every day. It’s a wealth of information.
Where can I find a brass or other hall tree to hang visitors’ or family coats on? They had some at Eddie’s Wheel & Deal Discount but they no longer carry any. Thank you. – No Name, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots did locate an iron tree online at www.jcpenney.com for $99. You might consider checking in with your local J.C. Penney store or contact their catalogue department to see if they could assist you here.
In the meantime, you might also consider checking out: www.homedecorators.com who do have some copper and other hall trees made out of a variety of woods and metals. You can also reach them via phone, or to request a catalogue, at 1-877-537-8539; www.target.com who also show several listings on their Web site that might be of interest to you.
Dear Sun Spots: I love your column and thank you for all your help. Recently I’ve had to fish two dead skunks out of my garden pond. This is a small pond my son had put in for me this past Mother’s Day.
Can skunks swim? What’s the attraction? What can I do to prevent this from happening again? – Joanne Mitchell, Livermore.
Answer: According to a publication from the Virginia Cooperative Extension, skunks may come to ponds to eat small animals, insects, fruits, eggs, grubs and vegetation. Grub control and blood meal may help to keep the skunks from visiting the pond and flowerbeds. You might also consider removing or closing up fallen tree hollows, abandoned burrows and crawl spaces. Another option would be to install a fence or motion-sensing devices. In addition, consider contacting a professional exterminator to trap them. Perhaps other readers might also have some suggestions they’d be willing to share with you and help clear your yard of these unwelcome visitors.
