AUGUSTA (AP) – The Christian Civic League of Maine said Monday it started a political action committee to campaign against a Nov. 6 referendum proposal to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to build a racetrack casino in Washington County.

The league said it started the PAC, which it calls “Gambling with the way life should be,” to raise contributions for the upcoming campaign. The racino proposal will be Question 1 on the statewide election ballot.

Casinos No is also opposing the referendum.

Supporters last week kicked off their “Yes on Question 1” campaign. They say a harness-racing and slots facility would not only help the Passamaquoddy Tribe, but also provide government revenue and jobs for Maine’s easternmost county.

The slot machines would have to be approved by the municipality in which the tribal commercial race track is located. The initiated bill also would allow a high-stakes beano license for the tribe.

The racino proposal was sent to a public vote earlier this year when Gov. John Baldacci vetoed the citizen initiative. Promoters envision a project that could combine a harness-racing track with 1,500 slot machines, as well as a hotel, conference center and restaurants.
