PORTLAND – A grand jury has indicted a Massachusetts man on two counts of manslaughter stemming from a collision on a lake in which a boat was sliced in half by a large, high-powered speedboat.
The Cumberland County grand jury handed up the indictment against Robert LaPointe Jr. of Medway, Mass., in the Aug. 11 crash on Long Lake in Harrison. Terry Raye Trott of Naples and Suzanne Groetzinger of Berwick died in the wreck.

The crash happened at 9 p.m. when LaPointe’s 32-foot boat ran over the 14-foot motorboat boat operated by Trott.
LaPointe is also charged with four counts of aggravated operating under the influence and one count of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.

“The reckless conduct count alleges that LaPointe was reckless by operating a watercraft at excessive speed, failing to maintain adequate visibility, failing to keep clear when overtaking a watercraft, failing to yield to another watercraft and/or by operating the watercraft while under the influence of intoxicants,” a release issued by Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie  Anderson stated.
