JAY – The Jay Middle School Lego League Program will host a Community Night at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in the Jay Middle School cafeteria.

This year’s Lego League theme is “The Power Puzzle, Energy Resources – Meeting the Global Demand.”

Students have been working since the start of school preparing for this year’s southern Maine competition, which will be held on Saturday Dec. 1, at Bonnie Eagle High School. The Community Night is a chance for participants to share their projects with their community and gives the students a dress rehearsal before the competition.

Three teams of students from Jay Middle School have been designing robots using Lego Mindstorm NXT Kits to carry out missions that all relate to energy resources. Student-built and programmed robots have two and a half minutes to score as many points on the mission table as possible.

The teams have also been conducting energy resources research projects. Each team has picked a local building or facility. Teams have conducted energy audits of the facilities and have come up with ways to conserve energy and help meet the global demand for electricity.

Each team will need to make a five-minute presentation of their findings. The facilities researched include the Jay Middle School, Spruce Mountain Ski Area and the Jay Recycling and Transfer Station.

The Community Night will begin with presenters from Verso Paper, who will give information on energy resources at the Verso mill in Jay. Student teams will then make presentations of their research projects and will demonstrate their robots. There will be a special thank-you for those who assisted with the projects.

The event is open to the public, and students are hopeful that members of the community with an interest in the three facilities researched will be able to attend.
