Educators to meet

AUBURN – The Androscoggin Retired Educators Association will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Central Maine Community College Culinary Arts Building.

Lunch will be a choice of chicken breast or baked haddock with fruit cup, whipped potatoes, vegetable, salad, dessert and beverage. Cost of the meal is $8.75 for chicken and $10.75 for baked haddock.

Send reservation and payment to Pat McCluskey, 139 East Shore Road, Peru, ME 04290 by Wednesday, Nov. 7.

If any retired educator in the Lewiston-Auburn area needs transportation, he/she should call Western Maine Transportation at 784-9335 by Monday, Nov. 12. The transportation will be provided free through a grant from the Jane Ritter Foundation.

Event reset

AUBURN – A Cajun-style family event slated for Nov. 3 had to be rescheduled due to a storm Saturday night. The event will be Saturday, Nov. 10, at the First Universalist Church of Auburn. Jimmyjo and the Jumbol’ayuhs will play for a family-style Cajun food, dance and musical event.

Proceeds will help members who volunteered to spend Thanksgiving week in New Orleans to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina with Habitat for Humanity and the First Universalist Church of Rockland.

Grange program

AUBURN – Members of Androscoggin Pomona Grange will meet Wednesday, Nov. 7, for a 6:30 p.m. supper at Turner Grange. The business meeting, which will start at 7:30, will include a program put on by the Family, Health and Hearing Committee. Guest Officers Night will be observed, with officers from other Pomona Granges filling the chairs. All members and guests are welcome.

Seniors dinner

AUBURN – The First Auburn Seniors will have a Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Martindale Country Club. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and there will be special pot o’ gold drawings. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Lighthouse Jubilees.

The prize winners at the Oct. 17 meeting were Helen Stelmak, Buzz Edwards, Geraldine Marton, Dick Brushwein and Rita Marquis.

Seats are still available for a trip to Chicopee, Mass., on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 13 and 14. There will be a New Year’s Eve trip to Leominster, Mass., Dec. 30 to Jan. 1. It is not necessary to be a member of First Auburn Seniors to go on the trips. Call Joyce Poole at 784-3429 for more information.

Band to play

LEWISTON – The New England Recruiting Battalion’s Maine Company continues to support education in local schools by showcasing “Avalanche,” the 10th Mountain Division’s rock band, performing and educating students about music and life in the Army.

The band will perform at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Lewiston High School.

The ensemble performs Top 40 rock as well as classics and has previously performed in schools all over New York. Additionally, “Avalanche” has deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Guest officers

AUBURN – Guest Officers Night will be observed at Danville Junction Grange 65 at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Members from other granges will fill the chairs. Mitch Thomas, local entertainer, will be guest pianist and will provide music as part of the program.

Refreshments will be served at the close of the meeting. All members and guests are invited.

Travelers meal

LEWISTON – Members of Twin City Council 160, United Commercial Travelers of America, will hold a dinner meeting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Chickadee Restaurant. All members and guests are invited.

Women’s health

LEWISTON – A program on the “Importance of Women’s Health Care” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the Hillview Community Center, Rideout Avenue.

Topics will include the importance of breast exams and preconception care. There will be displays and speakers from WIC and WMCA Health Services (previously Tri-County Health Services).

There will be an interpreter available. Contact WIC for more information at 795-4016. All are welcome, including children. There will be food, prizes and a drawing.

Grange fair

NEW GLOUCESTER – Sabbathday Lake Grange will hold its annual Christmas Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Those interested in joining should call Pam Dyer at 657-4612 to rent tables or for more information. Deadline for renting tables is Nov. 28.

Holistic fair

AUBURN – A Lewiston-Auburn holistic fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Universal Universalist Church Vestry Hall, 169 Pleasant St.

It will feature mini-dowsing demonstrations free with admission in the afternoon. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a dowsing workshop by the Maine Society of Dowsers. Cost will be $10 for the two-hour workshop. Preregistration is required,as space is limited.

There will be 50/50 raffle fundraiser to help Jeffrey, a freshman from Brunswick, go to China with the People to People Ambassador Program.
