Since our history teacher, Mr. Ed Tucker, resigned last year, we obviously needed a replacement. Mrs.Callahan is teaching history for the first time in her career, and she’s doing a fabulous job! Before teaching middle school history, she taught special education in the same school! For more information I interviewed Mrs.Callahan.

“What made you want to teach history?”

Her reply was, “I had a fantastic professor at UMF, Dr. Brian Lister, who made history interesting. He made it sound like a story that all students were a part of at the time. History came alive in his classes and I grew more and more interested in the subject. I want to teach history because I want students to learn to be patriotic, involved and be knowledgeable citizens in our society.”

“What are your feelings about it since you’ve started teaching history?”

“I am still very excited about teaching and about teaching history. There are so many things I want to try and do this school year. I just hope there is enough time to accomplish them all! I hope to find connections with as many students as possible while enhancing their knowledge of history.”

“Do you enjoy teaching history as much as you enjoyed teaching special education.”

” Before teaching special education, I worked in the junior high as an ed tech for three years. I love working with middle school-aged students. They are still curious, adventurous, fun, jovial, innocent, aren’t afraid to go crazy at times and push the limits. This is true of all students, whether they are regular education students or special education students. I enjoy them both for different reasons too. I liked the small groups and slightly less formal class setting and the structure special education offered. I also like getting to know all of the students in middle school again. Plus, who doesn’t love to work at Elm Street School? It’s the best place to be!”

Mr.Tucker was a hard teacher to replace, but Mrs.Callahan is doing a fantastic job, and Elm Street School is fortunate to have her in our presence!
